Frequently Asked Questions
We frequently are asked many questions about our service. Below we have attempted to answer those most often asked ones.
Q: Are Sea Kayaks stable?
A: Yes! The kayaks we use are the Necky Amaruks or Boreal Esperanto. Their wide design and the fact that they have a rudder make them very stable. They are Tandem Sea Kayaks.
Q: Will I see wildlife on my Sea Kayak tour with Maine State Sea Kayak?
A: The chances are good. Paddling close to shore and islands increases the chances. MSSK has a very good record on finding wildlife. Bald eagles, osprey, cormorant, harbor seals, loons, gulls, terns, and harbor porpoise are the primary sightings. Please bring a camera on your tour.
Q: How big/tall do I have to be to go on a tour?
A: (4 ft 8 inches tall - 56" or 143cm). Each youth is required to paddle in a tandem Sea Kayak with an adult. If there is a question on whether or not someone is OK to go on a tour, please stop by our shop (254 Main St. in Southwest Harbor) in person.
